Then, in 1963, in an exhibition that would be echoed to similar effect eight years later on the other side of the pond at the Abstract Design in American Quilts exhibit at the Whitney Museum, the Bowes Museum in Durham exhibited North Country quilts for the first time in a gallery. This would plant the seeds for a revival of quilting in England.
Dorothy Osler calls the period between 1970 and 2000 a “defining period for quilting.” As in North America, some British quilters, perhaps inspired by seeing the form behind the function of old North Country quilts and certainly inspired by the huge revival in the United States, forged a new style of quilting, elevating it to the form of art. These textile artists were not interested in making bed coverings. Instead, they set out to create quilts that would be seen on the walls of museums and art galleries and purchased by private collectors.
Interest swelled enough to merit the formation of the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles in 1979, and there remains plenty of passion in Britain for both the art and craft. In addition to ever-evolving styles, the revival of interest in England also brought with it a desire to reproduce quilts made in North Country style.
